When you open up your new laptop for the first time it is a great feeling. Everything is quick and you cant wait to get busy on your new machine. That is until you open the the My Programs folder in the start up menu and realize you have no software on your new laptop. One piece of software you would like to see standard on your computer is the MS Office suite. Unfortunately you will not get it unless you’ve dished out extra cash for it. Luckily in the software world for every paid software package there is a free one. Most of these alternative are just as good as the paid version.
The free alternative for MS Office is Open Office, a free office package developed by Sun Micro Systems. I have used this package before and to be honest there is little difference between the Sun and Mirosoft office. I will strongly encourage you to download it and give it a try. The Open Office suite includes the following Programs
* Calc – Spreadsheets
* Writer – Word Processor
* Impress – Presentations
* Base – Data Base
* Draw – Graphics

I have been using both open Office Calc and MS Excel and it is quite similar. It just takes time to get use to the navigation of Calc. Oh ya, the best part of Open Office Calc is that it’s free!!
Wonder what will happen to Open Office now that Oracle has bought Sun. Hopefully they will not scrap this project.
I use MS Excel 2003 and Excel 2007 extensively. Is the Open Office Calc more like Excel 2003 or is it as feature-full as Excel 2007?
Unfortunately openoffice has the same look and feel as Excel 2003. In terms of features they are almost identical.
I use only OpenOffice and I think it’s great. I used to use Ms Office, but it wasn’t so good.
You should also try SSuite Office for a free office suite. They have a whole range of office suites that are free for download.
Their software also don’t need to run on Java or .NET, like so many open source office suites, so it makes the software very small and efficient. Perfect for Windows XP running on laptops, netbooks, and even on desktops.
