Speed Up Your Computer – Part I

Posted on May 5th, 2009 | by admin

Have you ever noticed how fast your laptop runs when it’s still new and how it tends to slow down over time. This happened with my laptop recently. My browser started to crash and it took time to open the most basic application in Windows. With 2GB RAM and running Windows XP, the specs wasn’t the cause for my Lappies civil worker like performance.

Here is how I managed to speed up my laptop

1. Hit ctrl+alt+del. This will bring up the task manager

task-manager1

2. Click on the processes tab; Here you will see all the processes running on your system, sapping out all your resources. Most of these processes you don’t even need. It is just running without you knowing about it. So where does all these processes come from. Most of them are Windows related and they need to be there to keep your operating system running but some of them are actual programs running on the background.These are usually programs that you have installed that are opened automatically when your system boots up. We say, these programs are on the start-up.

3. The first step to improve the speed of your laptop is to remove all unwanted programs from the start-up.

4. For step 3 and steps to follow you will need a free program called CCleaner. Click here to download

5. Start CCleaner after you’ve installed and downloaded it

6. Click on the tools icon

cccleaner1

7. Click on the start-up tab

8. Go through the list and uncheck all processes you don’t want to run on start-up. ( Don’t remove any processes that are in the Windows folder. The programs you will uncheck will usually be in the program files folder

9. After step 8 you system will only load the necessary programs on start up. This will have a dual affect.

  • Windows will start-up quicker
  • Your system will have more available RAM. This will increase your systems general performance

10.Let’s move on to the next step. Still under the tools section, click on uninstall and uninstall all programs that you don’t use often. Don’t be a hoarder. Get your house clean. Uninstalling programs will have a major affect on your system’s performance

11. Now will be a good time to restart your system before you proceed to step 12. You will already notice drastic improvements.

12. Read and apply “Speed up Your Laptop – Part II”

Laptop without a keyboard?

Posted on April 15th, 2009 | by admin

When you make an innovation, you generally improve something. I don’t think when when Apple decided to remove the keyboard from there laptop they intended to make life easier for there users. I can imagine the wheel makes navigation more intuitive but I wonder how long it will take me to make a blog post with it.

I cant help but think that Mac was not serious when they designed this product. Maybe they intended it to be a over sized over priced iPod. It will be interesting to see if people will buy the Mac Book Wheel. For now I am content in having 60 keys instead of one.

Free Alternative to MS Office

Posted on April 11th, 2009 | by admin

Open Office

When you open up your new laptop for the first time it is a great feeling. Everything is quick and you cant wait to get busy on your new machine. That is until you open the the My Programs folder in the start up menu and realize you have no software on your new laptop. One piece of software you would like to see standard on your computer is the MS Office suite. Unfortunately you will not get it unless you’ve dished out extra cash for it. Luckily in the software world for every paid software package there is a free one. Most of these alternative are just as good as the paid version.

The free alternative for MS Office is Open Office, a free office package developed by Sun Micro Systems. I have used this package before and to be honest there is little difference between the Sun and Mirosoft office. I will strongly encourage you to download it and give it a try. The Open Office suite includes the following Programs

* Calc – Spreadsheets
* Writer – Word Processor
* Impress – Presentations
* Base – Data Base
* Draw – Graphics

Asus Origami Concept Laptop

Posted on April 10th, 2009 | by admin

asus origami

Laptops have come leaps and bounds in the last couple of years. Can you remember the bulky machines from just a couple of years ago. These days a pocket laptops has more processing power than a monster desktop machine had a few years back. Take the Asus EEE PC 904 HD Laptop for instance. This Machine packs 900Mhz of processing power an 1GB RAM and it weighs in at a mere 1.4kg. Apart from the dramatic increase in laptop performance, there was also quite dramatic changes in designs. These days a pink laptop is not an uncommon site. Mac has even gone so far as to make a laptop that trades in the standard keyboard in for a wheel.

But one of the craziest advances in laptops I have seen is this folding laptop concept from Asus. It is only in concept phase but we hope to see it in production soon. Take a closer look at the Origami Laptop in the vid below.

Laptop or Desktop, which should I buy?

Posted on April 9th, 2009 | by admin

The advent of technology has made life a lot easier for many of us. The digital age has brought us a wide array of tools that makes work and pleasure easier to access and accomplish. Despite having all types of computers, communication devices and related technologies available for us, we still have to make a choice as to which one fits our needs best.

Choosing the right technology can spell a difference in how we accomplish the things we ought to. Take for instance, choosing between a desktop and a laptop. Each has its set of advantages and disadvantages. Generally, if you intend to take your work with you, a laptop will serve you well as mobility is its greatest asset. However, if you see yourself working most of the time in a corner in an office or a room in the house, a desktop will fit the bill.

Go for a laptop if you:

1. Want to bring your PC with you wherever you go or if you do a lot of travelling and working at the same time

2. Work in a small space – a boarding house, a dormitory or a tiny apartment – all would necessitate the use of a laptop. Where space is a premium, the small footprint and the absence of wires give the laptop an advantage over a desktop.

3. Are concerned about having a hefty electric bill – energy consumption on a laptop is up to 80 percent less than a desktop

Choose a desktop PC if you:

1. Want to get more bang for the buck – similarly priced desktops offer more features than their laptop counterparts

2. Will be working on the same spot most of the time and if you do move you won’t mind the hassle

3. Plan to upgrade your unit later on

4. Are a heavy user of multimedia files

laptop vs desktop

As a computer tech, I hear this question all the time from clients in one form or another. For some reason, the first answer I give, which I feel is perfectly logical, always surprises them – It depends on what you use the computer for.

Reasons for purchasing a laptop have always been pretty cut and dry – you need to be able to take your computer with you. However, with the advent of wi-fi hotspots everywhere now, the laptop’s role in our lives has evolved beyond just “mobile computing.”

With a new laptop, you can surf the web, keep your schedules up to date, email, use it as a great time waster (playing games in an airport lounge, anyone?), keep your projects and presentations current, use it as a mobile data entry device, or even cuddle up in bed and watch your favorite movie on the new wide-screens available. Laptops literally unchain you from the desk, and wireless networking adds the wings to let you really soar.

A desktop however is slowly evolving into something beyond the traditional “get connected” machine. They are becoming our personal movie theaters, jukeboxes, game centers and much more. But with towers weighing in at almost 50lbs (22kg) they make lousy portables. So, as the desktop grows deeper roots into our homes and personal lives, they’re less of a web surfing machine, and more of a fixture in our entertainment.

Laptop or desktop, which should you buy? I say have one of each. Turn your desktop system into your home theater, or your new game console system, or a jukebox for those fun parties. Heck, try all of the above and really have a blast.

Then use your laptop to free you from the desk. Have a seat on the couch, or outside on the porch. Go ahead, kick off your shoes and put your feet up while you surf the web. Or take it with you to your next business meeting and plug it into the overhead and impress your boss. With a laptop, you’re only limited by your imagination.
